Guthrie Elementary School
Background
The original and historic 1910 inner-city school was scheduled to be torn down to make room for a new elementary school. Given the residents’ deep connection to the original building, the new Guthrie elementary was built to mimic the proportions and character of the original school, including its orientation to the streetscape. It provides all the modern amenities needed for today’s educational program in a completely accessible building. Completed in spring 2000, the new school welcomed its first class of students in a physical structure that not only inspires teaching and learning but also ties the community together physically and spiritually.
