Cancer Survivor’s Park
Background
Out of more than 20 submissions, Clark+Associates Architects unanimously won a competition sponsored by the UrbanArt Commission to design a Cancer Survivor’s Park within Audubon Park in East Memphis. The park would be one of 23 built in cities nationwide by a grant from the R. A. Bloch Cancer Foundation. The design focuses on the concept of a healing garden, which includes symbolism of butterflies and wildflowers, and a labyrinth. An existing line of magnolia trees created two distinct areas, one part of which would be oriented to the street, serving as a buffer and street entry. The other part created an opportunity to insert a sculptural low wall, parallel to the trees, resulting in an inviting place of contemplation, peacefulness and restfulness away from opposing street traffic. Commissioned artwork and inspirational plaques are placed throughout, and a bronze sculpture titled “Cancer … There’s Hope” (located at all 23 park locations nationwide) are placed throughout the park to create an overall space that is intended to encourage, inspire and celebrate survivorship.
