State of Tennessee—Intermediate Care Facilities

Background

Design guidelines were produced for the construction of 60 individual homes across the state of Tennessee as permanent residences for intellectually and physically disabled individuals. Each home is a disguised healthcare facility placed among traditional neighborhoods to blend with the preexisting residential fabric. Each house provides individual bedroom suites for four people. The living environment attempts to give residents the most accommodating physical access and special needs equipment to create as normal daily living conditions as possible. Homes also are built according to sustainable guidelines through the use of materials and methods. Additionally, traditional materials, such as brick, stone and siding are used to emphasize a residential quality.
